Recertification examinations and refresher training

If you hold an NDT certification, you are required to revalidate your certificate by examination at a registered Authorised Qualifying Body to ensure the level of competency to conduct inspections is upheld.

The validity of a certificate is normally five years from the date of certification, and the expiry date is indicated on the certificate and/or wallet card.

It is the responsibility of the certificate holder to initiate the process required for revalidation and expiry of your certification means that you will no longer be certified to undertake inspections under the relevant certification scheme.

If you hold PCN radiography certification, you will be required to be in possession of a valid PCN basic radiation safety or radiological protection certification (or alternative national radiation safety certification where the certificate holder concerned is engaged in radiography exclusively outside of the United Kingdom) to maintain the validity of the radiography certificate.

If you hold an NDT certification for Employer Based Schemes, such as SNT-TC-1A, your recertification renewal date will be determined within the company written practice.

PCN six week requirement

From 1st January 2023, PCN will be re-instating the six week prior to expiry requirement for revalidation of certification, meaning you will need to complete your recertification exam at least six weeks prior to expiry date.

For example, you will need to revalidate your certificate by 2 January 2023 if your certificate expires on the 13 February 2023.

If you are unable to renew prior to the six-week expiry date, you can submit a late deferral form directly to PCN. If you have extenuating circumstances impacting your ability to recertify, this may be reviewed by PCN on a case-by-case basis.

Expiration of PCN certificate

If your PCN certificate has expired, you may apply for late renewal up to 12 months after the date of expiry (and no later) using PCN form PSL/28 obtainable from BINDT.

You may also use PSL/28 if you recognise in advance that, for whatever reason, you will be unable to submit their application for renewal by the expiry date. In this instance, you may apply on PSL/28 for deferred renewal.

It is emphasised that acceptance of an application for late or deferred renewal/recertification does not extend the validity of the PCN certificate concerned. Contact PCN directly for further information.
