Stephen Thompson

Stephen is an NDT Level 3 Consultant, Trainer, and Examiner within the Level 3 Services Consultancy team at Argyll Ruane. With over 13 years of industry experience, predominantly within the aerospace sector, he has held a range of quality and inspection roles. He began his NDT career as a Junior Quality Engineer at a well-known Sheffield foundry, completing Level 2 and Level 3 apprenticeships while gaining broad exposure to heat treatment, moulding, castings, and NDT inspection processes.

He has since progressed into positions including NDT Training Manager and Quality Manager, leading technician teams, overseeing audits and quality systems, and establishing a new NDT training facility and Quality Department. Stephen has hands-on experience in Magnetic Testing, Visual Testing, Penetrant Testing, and Immersion Ultrasonic Testing.

Upon joining Argyll Ruane, he embarked on a structured three-year development programme, supported by mentorship from senior Level 3 consultants, to further strengthen his technical capability as a responsible Level 3. His role includes procedure writing, conducting performance reviews and audits, delivering international training courses, and marking examinations.

Top tip for anyone entering the NDT industry: Take every opportunity to learn, seek guidance from experienced professionals, and never stop developing your technical and practical skills.

Outside of work

Outside of work, Stephen enjoys staying active and setting new physical challenges. He spends time training in the gym and playing badminton. He also enjoys long walks with his partner and dogs, as well as planning new DIY projects at home.
