Case Study – Sheffield Forgemasters
Consultant: David Griffin
Sheffield Forgemasters International Ltd produces a range of products for mills and presses, nuclear, defence, power generation, offshore oil and gas and materials processing industries.
The company has played a significant role in the development of new materials and processes in the power generation and offshore markets. Technical expertise enables the company to spearhead component manufacture.
David’s connection to Sheffield Forgemasters goes all the way back to when he was learning his trade with the organisation. Three decades later, the association is still strong as Sheffield Forgemasters continues to be one of the largest forgemasters in the world.
The Challenge
Sheffield Forgemasters already has a large qualified NDT department with a number of Level 3 qualified engineers, however a need arose for a Level 3, qualified to ASNT in radiographic testing, to be a third party witness in the nuclear and power industries.
Another challenge Sheffield Forgemasters had was meeting requirements for a client working in the US, following a tightening of regulations and auditing processes by their authorities.
The Solution
As David already holds ASNT Level III certification in radiographic testing he was able to help Sheffield Forgemasters immediately, inspecting over 500 radiographs per forging and providing the vital ASNT stamp of approval.
To meet the requirements of Sheffield Forgemasters’ American client, David worked closely with all stakeholders to develop a bespoke examination and certification programme and to provide the precise wording of their written practice document.
The Results
Sheffield Forgemasters were happy with the work which David completed, ensuring that work could continue for their clients.
