HI Christian, could you tell us a little about yourself and how you got into NDT.
It was by chance actually through Jordan Wood who is another tutor here, he and my brother used to work together at an NDT company and when he heard I was looking for an apprenticeship in engineering of some kind, he encouraged me to apply.
You joined as an apprentice, what would you say to other potential apprentices considering NDT as a career path?
I would fully recommend apprenticeships not only for people considering NDT but pretty much any career with practical aspects. I believe that experience accounts for so much more than just knowledge, and that’s something that you are given in an apprenticeship that things like a degree can’t always provide.
Congratulations on passing your recent UT 3.8 & 3.9 exam, you must feel a great sense of achievement. What areas would you like to expand on moving forward over the next few years?
I’m hoping to fully complete my UT by getting my forgings and castings done within the next year, then after that, maybe looking into TOFD as I hear there is a lot of maths involved, but we will cross that bridge when we get to it.
What do you like about teaching at IAR and working with the team?
Teaching has always been something I have enjoyed, I’ve had some experience teaching in secondary schools and given the chance when I’m older, I think that it’s something I would like to return to. As for teaching here, I don’t think there are many other jobs in which you can get such satisfaction from knowing you have done a good job. Helping people further their careers and make it an enjoyable experience at the same time, I don’t really think that can be beaten. As for working with the team, the Tutors here are extremely knowledgeable, experienced and friendly. You couldn’t ask for a better group of people to teach our courses.
Finally, if you were an NDT method, which would you be?
I would probably be Penetrant testing because I do things pretty well but I always make a mess while doing it.
