Our Group Technical Manager and Level 3 Consultant, Kristian Hampson, recently travelled to Oslo to deliver a bespoke FMC, TFM, TFMi™ and related technologies training course for DNV Norway and ScanTest, hosted on-site at DNV’s headquarters.

About the clients

ScanTest Norway

ScanTest is a specialist NDT provider based in Skvanda, offering high-quality onshore and offshore inspection services. With expertise in Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) and other advanced inspection methods, ScanTest ensures asset integrity, safety and compliance across the oil, gas and energy industries.

DNV

DNV is an international assurance and risk-management organisation operating in more than 100 countries. The company works across key sectors including maritime, energy, healthcare and supply chain—supporting clients in improving safety, quality, sustainability and regulatory compliance.

Why they required Advanced FMC/TFM training

Both organisations brought experienced technicians, including Level 3 personnel, seeking deeper insight into FMC, TFM and TFMi™ as these technologies become more widely adopted.

As TFM becomes increasingly utilised across industry, their teams wanted a stronger technical grounding in how these methods work, where they add value, and how to deploy them effectively in real inspection scenarios. Participants were keen to deepen their understanding of:

  • The strengths and limitations of TFM compared with PAUT and TOFD
  • How different TFM modes respond to various flaw types
  • When TFM offers added value in real inspection scenarios
  • How FMC and TFM can be used to complement conventional Ultrasonic techniques
What we delivered

Kristian delivered a three-day, application-focused training course using the Sonatest Veo3 and UTstudio+ software.

Key elements of the course included:

  • Phased Array principles and instrument setup
  • FMC theory and data acquisition
  • Exploration of TFM modes and their practical applications
  • Practical comparisons of PAUT vs. TFM imaging across multiple flaw types
  • Inspection of an industry-supplied HTHA sample
  • Introduction to TFMi™, including practical data capture and discussion of its technical advantages
What the delegates learned

Delegates gained a clear understanding of how advanced UT techniques can support inspection quality and decision-making. Key takeaways included:

  • Insight into where FMC, TFM and TFMi™ add value
  • Confidence in configuring the Veo3 for advanced data capture
  • Improved decision-making when selecting inspection methods
  • Recognition that TFM is most effective when used alongside established techniques, where defects have been found and need to be evaluated further

They also highlighted the Veo3’s fast processing, reliability, and unique functionality.
