Delivering high quality radiation safety training in Ireland

Last month, our Level 3 Consultant, Trainer and Examiner, Andy Fox, delivered a Basic Radiation Safety (BRS) course at the EIS facility in Ireland.

The training brought together 10 professionals and focused on building the knowledge and confidence required to work safely and compliantly with radiation.

Supporting industry through practical learning

The course was combined core theory with real-world application, ensuring participants could confidently apply what they learned in practice. Key topics included:

Radiation physics and units
Radiographic equipment
Biological effects and dose limits
Radiation detection and measurement
Principles of radiation protection, including calculations
Storage and transport of radioactive substances
Appointments, responsibilities, and personal dosimetry
Local rules including Irish regulatory requirements, contingency plans, and normative documents
Ionising Radiation Regulations (2017)

A visit to the on-site radiography booth formed part of the course, providing practical context and allowing participants to observe controlled working practices in a live environment.

Delivering meaningful outcomes

Some of the course participants included engineers, welding specialists and management from Designer Group – an international engineering contractor operating across data centres, infrastructure, and commercial sectors – to strengthen their understanding of radiation safety measures in practice.

Meet the trainer: Andy Fox

Andy Fox is a Level 3 Consultant, Trainer and Examiner at Argyll Ruane. With over 35 years of experience within NDT, Andy is one of the most experienced and highly qualified Level 3 NDT specialists in Radiographic Testing globally.

He brings extensive expertise across the oil and gas sector, as well as castings and weld inspection. A specialist in Film Radiography, Andy is also highly experienced in Computed Radiography (CR) and Digital Radiography (DR).
