We are pleased to announce that our Level 3 Consultant, Trainer and Examiner, Nathan Bate was awarded the British Institute of NDT (BINDT) NDT Engineer of the year for 2023-2024.

The award recognises achieving an excellent result at the end-point assessment in the year in question for the Level 6 NDT Engineer apprenticeship.

A journey from technician to award-winning engineer

Nathan’s introduction to the NDT industry happened almost by accident. After earning a BSc in Sport Science and working in the health sector, he was introduced to NDT through a traineeship opportunity in 2011. Reflecting on the start of his journey, Nathan said:

This career pivot opened up numerous opportunities, and Nathan soon earned qualifications in visual testing, magnetic testing, penetrant testing, PMI (XRF analysis), and hardness testing.

Since this time, Nathan has worked across a range of sectors, including rail, manufacturing, general engineering (fabrication, machine shop and welding), nuclear and oil and gas. His experience includes providing NDT technical support to the Rolls Royce small modular reactor project, looking at design for inspection and manufacturing at an early stage for heavy pressure vessels and pipework.

A passion for the NDT industry

Nathan is a registered Incorporated Engineer (IEng) and has gained a BSC in NDT, in addition to multiple PCN and ASNT Level III’s.

Since joining the Argyll Ruane team in February 2023, Nathan has continued to excel in his role as a Level 3 Consultant, Trainer, and Examiner. He supports clients by offering Level 3 consultancy services, including conducting audits, performance reviews, procedure writing, and overseeing training programs. His ability to offer both practical insights and high-level technical expertise ensures clients receive top-tier support.

What truly sets Nathan apart is his passion for NDT and his love for the diverse environments and experiences it offers. Speaking about what interests him most about his work, Nathan shared:

Looking ahead

As Nathan continues to support clients in his role at Argyll Ruane, we are excited to see his continued contributions to the field.

Congratulations, Nathan, on winning the BINDT NDT Engineer of the Year Award! Your journey serves as an inspiration to many, and we are proud to have you as part of the Argyll Ruane team.
